...I challenge anyone to find a superior point location manual ... |

As a second year acupuncture school student, I have found the Acupoint Location Guide to be a most amazing little book! More than any other single resource, the Acupoint Location Guide has helped me survive scores of tests as well as made me more confident when locating points on patients in clinic. I would highly recommend Alon Lotan's Acupoint Location Guide to other Chinese Medicine students or anyone else wanting to become more familiar with acupuncture or acupressure. The drawings are excellent and the location descriptions are NCCAOM approved. I challenge anyone to find a superior point location manual. This lightweight little book is worth far more than its weight in gold to me. I couldn't have made it this far without it! |

Alon Lotan started his working career as a battlefield paramedic in the Israeli army. This was a fairly brutal introduction to the structure and function of the human body, and he started to wonder about alternative ways of treating the individual. Consequently, following his time in the army, he sought training in TCM. He developed an interest in the process of education, and, combined with skills as an illustrator, he embarked on a project to help acupuncture students in learning point location. The result is this guide, which he describes as the tool he was looking for when learning point location himself. As well as drawing on his own experiences, he travelled to 30 traditional schools across the US to compile relevant information. In a somewhat self-effacing way, he does not consider himself to be an author, but rather a composer of illustrations and notes. This book has an appearance unlike any other acupuncture point location guide. The most striking difference is in the novel diagrams used, and the space for the student's notes alongside. The diagrams are very impressive line drawings that meld body surface outline with the relevant deeper, usually skeletal, structures. The diagrams illustrate appropriate orientations to facilitate practical point finding, and include all the relevant anatomical features for location. Another unique concept is the author's suggestion that the student colour in the anatomical features in the diagrams. This is particularly sensible in regard of the blood vessels, usually arteries, included in some of the diagrams, as in their original form they are not prominent. The diagrams are, for the most part, excellent anatomical representations. The notes are clear and concise; however, there is no mention of needle angulation or depth. This text does what it claims to do -aid the accurate location of acupuncture points. The diagrams are far superior to those in most of the existing point location guides. The book may be improved by the addition of text that promote safe needling practice; however, as a point location guide, it is certainly one of the best on the market. |

Precise point location is an aspect of acupuncture care often neglected, to the patient's detriment. The Acupoint Location Guide by Alon Lotan addresses these deficiencies with a marvelous combination of precise text and clear anatomical drawings that provide easy landmarks for point location. The book depicts all relevant bones, tendons, and muscle groups. Point names are given both in Chinese and with NCCAOM approved abbreviations. It comes in a convenient handbook format with large pictures and handy tips to aid in point location. For both the beginner and the experienced practitioner, this is a useful text that should be a staple in every practitioner's Oriental Medicine library. |

I thought that the book was great. I really appreciated the western anatomical aspect of your locations. Your tips and references section was also very good. Your inclusion of muscles (both drawn and labeled) on the drawings was very useful. |

It was with graet pleasure that I had the opportunity to go through your book in it's new format. As a teacher of Traditional Chinese Medicine for the last 10 years, I am aware to the difficulties found when we try to teach with simplicity and efficacy the proper location of Acupuncture points. In your book I find a blending of accuracy and simplicity rare in similar textbooks. I completely agree eith the choice of your references, as it represents a wide and commonly accepted source, a fact that diminishes the hesitance and unclarity regarding some difficult issues in the field of point location. It is my feeling that the present book will develop into a main source of study for many students and practitioners of Traditional Chinese Medicine in the west. |

This book answers one of the most critical problems in acupuncture: how to accurately locate the acupoints. It is imperative to practice exact point location. Inaccurate needling may not only cause ineffective treatment, but may even lead to harm (e.g. penetration of blood vessels, injury to nerves, etc.). In addition, the location is closely related to one’s body frame and structure - the points on the body of a slender woman are not the same as those of a heavy man, and both are different from those of a small child. In this guide, Alon has found the perfect method of simplifying points location technique through the combination of unique, all new original illustrations and easy-to-follow text for each and every point on all the meridians. Special attention was given to combine in every illustration all anatomical information (skin, muscle, artery and bone- if relevant, in best body posture) to guide the reader how to locate the point. The comparative maps and the Introduction section complement the text and the illustrations. The creative combination of one who has practiced both acupuncture and shiatsu, along with a paramedic’s anatomical know-how, and the talent of a designer, have culminated in this attractive, well-written and user-friendly book which can be used as a first-class guide for students as well as practitioners. |
